About the author
Brian Levy currently teaches at the Luskin School of Public Affairs at the University of California, Los Angeles. Previously, he was Professor of the Practice of International Development at the School of Advanced International Studies, Johns Hopkins University, USA since 2012, and (from 2012-2019) the founding Academic Director of the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance at the University of Cape Town. He worked at the World Bank from 1989-2012, including (from 2007-2010) as head of the Bank’s Governance and Anti-Corruption Secretariat. His books include Working with the Grain (Oxford University Press, 2014); as lead author and editor, The Politics and Governance of Basic Education: A Tale of Two South African Provinces (OUP, 2018); and (as co-author), Political Settlements and Development: Theory, Evidence, Implications (OUP, 2022). He completed his Ph.D in economics at Harvard University in 1983.
